Book Review | Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls #1)

Author: Maggie Stiefvater

Publisher: Scholastic Press
Page Number: 390
Genre: Fantasy
Publication Date: August 1, 2009
Synopsis from Goodreads:
For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without.

Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

My Review:
The book's premise didn't remind me of Twilight, but as I noticed as the story progressed, I found myself comparing the two. However, I did enjoy this one.
Shiver follows a girl named Grace, who always watches this one wolf, with yellow eyes.
But her wolf is a werewolf, and not any regular werewolf- instead of changing when the moon is full, they change depending on the temperature. When it's warm, they're human, and when it's cold, they're a wolf again.
This intrigued me, because most books aren't even about wolves anymore, I think dead people are the new thing, and a new, different kind of werewolf? Gimme.
Grace wasn't the independent woman I like in YA novels (if you've watched Christine's (polandbananaBOOKS) video on judging the plot, you know the "independent woman" joke. *wink*), but I do suppose she had a heart. Sam was sweet, and so very desperate. The whole plot wasn't really there, things just happened. I do wonder how Grace's parents wouldn't suspect Sam being a wolf.
OH. And the whole romance. URGH. WHY DO YOU HAVE TO KEEP PUTTING INSTA-LOVE? WHY? POURQUOI? I enjoy it in some cases, but in this case, it doesn't even make sense. She likes him because he's hot, and what? SPOILER He "saved" her? Big deal. Actually, maybe it is. *END OF SPOILER* I seriously don't get it. They were on the same bed within one day of Grace meeting the human Sam, and urgh. Why?
Grace kind of ditches her two friends, Rachel and Olivia, when she meets the human Sam, and completely turns her back on school. Why doesn't the teacher notice? Why? Oh, and Jack. I hated him. Enough said.

Book Review | Paper Towns by John Green

Paper Towns

Author: John Green
Publisher: Speak
Page Number: 305
Genre: Contemporary
Publication Date: September 22, 2009
Synopsis from Goodreads:
Who is the real Margo?

Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs into his life—dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge—he follows. After their all-nighter ends, and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues—and they're for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees the girl he thought he knew...

My Review:
I don't even know why I do this to myself. I dislike most of Green's books, but they're just like a guilty pleasure to me. So when I picked this up, I thought, Well, here I go again. And I'm going to make all of his fans feel bad because of this negative review. However, when I read it, I somewhat enjoyed it. For some reasons. Which I will tell you now.

Characters:
I liked Margo. She was mysterious, she loved mysteries, and she knew that life wasn't all fun and games. She's really smart, as she leaves all these clues, and fricken stealthy and ninja-y. Her pranks were hilarious and well-thought out, and I enjoyed every one of them.
Q, I'll admit, wasn't as good. However, he did balance out Margo's adventurous and mysterious personality quite well. <3 <3 <3 OTP.
I didn't like Q's choice of friends. Ben seemed perfectly normal in the beginning, but in the middle, he started to get on my nerves.
8 Snowflakes

Plot:
Interesting plot. This was an awesome mystery, and it's probably just Margo, but I really enjoyed reading how the "crew" as I call them, solved each mystery.
9 Snowflakes

Writing:
Green, of course, has this simplistic writing, that didn't work out too well in TFIOS, because he tried to make Gus sound all wise and stuff, so he sort of bounced between the two awkwardly. However, in Paper Towns, since he didn't have to make the characters sound Shakespearean, it flowed more. However, I still have a problem with his writing. It was boring and slow paced, and I just didn't enjoy it.
7 Snowflakes

Cover:
Okay, I know the one that I have displayed is the pretty cover-but the one I read, from the library, because I ain't spending my money on a John Green book, was HIDEOUS. You know, it's the one with the head...this one...
Paper Towns
ew, right?
So that one, I give like 1 Snowflakes to. But the one above, I like. So I give 10 Snowflakes.
So I'm gonna average the two up...and get
6 Snowflakes

Book Review | Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)

Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)

Author: Tahereh Mafi

Genre: Dystopian

Synopsis from Goodreads:

it's almost
time for war.

Juliette has escaped to Omega Point. It is a place for people like her—people with gifts—and it is also the headquarters of the rebel resistance.

She's finally free from The Reestablishment, free from their plan to use her as a weapon, and free to love Adam. But Juliette will never be free from her lethal touch.

Or from Warner, who wants Juliette more than she ever thought possible.

In this exhilarating sequel to Shatter Me, Juliette has to make life-changing decisions between what she wants and what she thinks is right. Decisions that might involve choosing between her heart—and Adam's life.

My Review:
CAUTION: THIS REVIEW WILL HAVE SPOILERS. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK.
WHOA. WTF. WHOA.
Wait.
What?
Those were my thoughts throughout the middle to the end of the book.
What's going on???
Why???
Team Adam or Team Warner?
Neither.
I used to think I loved Adam, but that's not true anymore. He's just so desperate for Juliette, she's like an obsession now. Siriusly. It's crazy. It's like Snape and Lily from Harry Potter. It's crazy.
And then, Warner appears, and is all like, "JULIETTE. I LOVE YOU. "
Like, why the heck???
Also, the crossed out lines and run on sentences that were okay before?
Nope. I'm tired sick of them. It's too much.
And the fact that Adam and Warner are brothers, and that Warner has a first name-MIND BLOWN. This book was way musher than Shatter Me. However, I did enjoy it somewhat, it just wasn't what I expected.
I still liked the descriptive writing, though. I'm disappointed in this book. I'll still try Ignite Me though. Tell me what you think of it in the comments below.
